Electricity Bill Hike in Tamil Nadu: There has been a huge increase in electricity prices in Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has announced a hike of 4.83 percent for domestic and all other consumers.
TNERC said that this increase in the state has been done according to Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) . The new tariff order will be effective from July 1 this year. The commission said that this step has been taken to compensate for the increasing financial deficit in the last few years.
According to the revised tariff, the hike ranges from Rs 5 to Rs 40 for domestic consumers in different categories , a Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) release said. Several opposition parties, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, have opposed the tariff revision.
How much bill will I have to pay now?
According to the new increased rates, now those who use electricity from 0 to 400 units will have to pay the bill at the rate of Rs 4.80 instead of Rs 4.60. Apart from this, for using 401 units to 500 units, the electricity consumer will have to pay the bill at the rate of Rs 6.45 per unit, increased from Rs 6.15. Whereas, for using electricity from 501 units to 600 units, the bill will have to be paid at the rate of Rs 8.55, increased from Rs 8.15.

According to the increased prices, now for using 601 to 800 units of electricity, the bill will have to be paid at the rate of Rs 9.65 instead of Rs 9.20. Along with this, for using 801 units to 1,000 units of electricity, the bill will have to be paid at the rate of Rs 10.70 instead of Rs 10.20. Whereas for more than 1,000 units, the bill will have to be paid at the rate of Rs 11.80.
Know the important things
- Free electricity up to 100 units for all domestic consumers and subsidies for handloom, agriculture and places of worship, among others, will continue.
- For 63 lakh domestic consumers who use up to 200 units of electricity for two months, this increase will be a maximum of Rs 5 per month.
- The new tariff will be a maximum of Rs 15 per month for 35 lakh domestic consumers consuming up to 300 units for two months.
- The revised tariff for domestic consumers consuming 400 units and 500 units for two months will be Rs 25 and Rs 40 per month respectively.
