The proposed fee hike at Delhi airport will result in 1.5 to 2 per cent increase in domestic airfares for passengers, a top official said. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital, has come up with a new proposal for economy and business category passengers. It has proposed different user charges for peak and other hours. The airport handles around 10.9 crore passengers annually. DIAL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said on Wednesday that after the approval of the higher fee, the revenue per passenger (YPP) will increase from the current Rs 145 to Rs 370.

What does YPP contain?

The YPP includes airline and passenger charges. The proposed hike is nearly 140 per cent compared to the 2006 levels, when GMR Group-led consortium DIAL took over the airport. “As suggested by AERA, out of Rs 370, about 30 per cent should be for airline charges and 70 per cent for passenger charges. Currently, it is 68 per cent airline charges and 32 per cent passenger charges,” Jaipuriar told the media.

Fares of international flights will also increase

He said that with the higher fee, the average maximum increase on domestic fares would be 1.5 to 2 percent and the increase in international fares would be less than one percent. Consultations are going on regarding the fee proposal submitted to the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA). This proposal is for the period from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2029. Currently, the User Development Fee (UDF) is around Rs 77 per passenger.
