Delhi Police has tightened its investigation process to identify illegal immigrants and has decided to no longer consider Aadhar Card, PAN Card and Ration Card as valid proof of Indian citizenship. This step has been taken to stop attempts of illegal immigrants, especially those belonging to Bangladesh and Rohingya community, to prove citizenship through fake documents.

Increasing strictness and surveillance

Under this new citizenship policy, which has come into effect from the end of April, the identification and monitoring of suspicious migrants has been increased in all districts of Delhi. The Deputy Commissioner of Police of each district has been given the responsibility of identifying such persons and taking action. Police say that many illegal migrants obtain Aadhaar, PAN and ration cards fraudulently. They present these as proof of Indian citizenship, whereas now these documents will not be valid.

Which documents will be valid?

Under the new rules, now only two documents will be considered as valid proof of citizenship.

Voter ID Card

Indian passport

If a person does not have these documents, he will have to approach the court to appeal for citizenship.

Status of refugees

Although some migrants also have refugee cards issued by UNHCR, Delhi Police says that refugee status alone is not a legal basis for staying in the country if it is not recognised by the Indian government. Deportation process may apply in such cases as well.

strict for security reasons

This campaign has been started at a time when 28 tourists were killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. After this, the Union Home Ministry canceled most visas of Pakistani citizens, except medical, diplomatic or long term visas. After April 29, all medical visas were also declared invalid. Out of about 3,500 Pakistani citizens present in Delhi, more than 400 out of 520 Muslim Pakistani citizens have returned to their country so far.
