New Delhi. Railways has clarified that any person can book tickets for others from his IRCTC account. A spokesperson of the Railway Ministry said on Tuesday (25 June) that any person having an account on IRCTC can get e-tickets for others and the news on social media regarding restrictions on e-ticket booking due to different surnames is false and misleading.
A post on the social media platform ‘X’ claimed that a person with an account on the website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) cannot book tickets from his account for other people who have different surnames. Regarding this, a railway spokesperson said, “The news circulating on social media about restrictions on booking e-tickets due to different surnames is false and misleading.”

According to the Indian Railways, any person can book tickets for friends, family and relatives through their personal user ID.
24 tickets can be booked every month from an Aadhaar-authenticated account
The spokesperson said that 12 tickets can be booked every month from a user’s account and if the account is Aadhaar-authenticated, then that user can book 24 tickets every month, provided at least one passenger on each ticket is also Aadhaar-authenticated.
Tickets booked on personal user IDs are not for commercial sale.
The spokesperson said, “Tickets booked on personal user IDs are not for commercial sale and doing so is an offence under Section 143 of the Railways Act, 1989.”
