The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has recently released an update stating that employees do not need to activate the Universal Account Number (UAN) again and again.
The EPFO posted on its social media accounts in this regard and clarified that employees do not need to generate a new UAN after their old job. This means that if you have changed your job, you do not need to get a new UAN.
What is UAN?
Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique number given to every employee by EPFO. It is a permanent 12-digit number, which remains the same throughout the employee’s Provident Fund service period. UAN remains the same even if the job is changed and the new PF account is linked to it.
EPFO new update
The Ministry of Labor and Employment has recently directed the EPFO to activate the UAN of all employees under a campaign. According to the new guidelines, the UAN of all new employees is to be activated by 30 November 2024 through Aadhaar-based OTP process.
Is it necessary to activate UAN every time?
EPFO has clarified that there is no need to generate a new UAN on leaving or changing the job. If an employee has two UANs by mistake, then the balance and service of the old UAN can be transferred to the new UAN under the One Member One EPF Account facility.
How to activate UAN?
- Go to EPFO Member Portal.
- Click on “Activate UAN” link.
- Fill in UAN, Aadhaar number, name, date of birth and mobile number linked with Aadhaar.
- Receive OTP on Aadhaar-linked mobile number and enter it.
- After activation, password will be sent to the registered mobile number.
