The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has partnered with Behavioural Insights Limited (BIT), a behavioral research organization, to simplify the process of updating Aadhaar biometrics for children. The partnership focuses on improving the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU), which is required for every child between the ages of 5 and 15. This update involves adding new fingerprints, iris scans, and photos.

Why do parents delay biometric updates?

UIDAI has observed that many parents, due to confusion, lack of knowledge, or inconvenience, do not update their children’s biometrics on time. This results in many children facing difficulties in accessing essential Aadhaar-related services.

UIDAI will therefore work with BIT to understand the reasons parents delay updates. Experts will then develop simple notifications, reminders, and communication tools to help families complete updates on time.

Incentives being given through fee waiver

To encourage children’s biometric updates, UIDAI has completely waived the update fee for children aged 7 to 15 for one year. This waiver is effective from October 1, 2025. This move will benefit millions of families, especially those who previously postponed updates due to the fees. This temporary waiver is intended to encourage parents to complete the MBU on time.

Why is this initiative important?

According to UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, combining technology with an understanding of human behavior will improve Aadhaar services and make them more user-friendly. He says this initiative is designed to simplify the experience for families and ensure children’s Aadhaar records are kept accurate.

BIT CEO Rachel Coyle also said that behavior-based approaches can be very helpful in ensuring timely biometric updates. This will allow children to access essential Aadhaar-related services without any hassle.

Why is timely biometric update important?

Timely biometric updates ensure a child’s Aadhaar record remains accurate and valid. This is important because Aadhaar is linked to numerous government schemes, identity documents, education benefits, and welfare programs. If the records are accurate, children will have no difficulty accessing these services.

Where and how to get Aadhaar updated?

To update their child’s Aadhaar biometrics, parents must visit any authorized Aadhaar enrollment center. At these centers, the child’s fingerprint, iris scan, and new photo are re-taken and immediately updated in the Aadhaar record.

To find out which center is closest to your home, you can visit the Bhuvan Aadhaar portal. This portal provides a list of all authorized Aadhaar centers across the country and their addresses. Parents can select the nearest enrollment center and go directly to the update center.
