When will banks start working for 5 days?

An agreement has been signed between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and employee unions regarding two days leave in a week for bank employees. Now this agreement is yet to get the approval of the government. It is believed that the government may announce 5 days working in December 2024. If this happens, banks will open only for five days in a week i.e. from Monday to Friday. Till now banks are closed only on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays.

Will we get approval from the government by this month?

The hopes of a 5-day working week for bank employees have increased. In December 2023, an agreement was signed between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and bank unions regarding this proposal, which included both public and private banks. Under this agreement, a framework for a 5-day working week was set in the banking sector, which is subject to government approval. In March 2024, IBA and bank unions signed the 9th joint note, which included 5-day working with Saturday and Sunday off. Now this proposal is awaiting government approval.

Will 5 days working be implemented from this month?

According to sources, the government may give its approval to this proposal at the end of this month or early 2025. If this proposal is approved, Saturdays will also be recognized as official holidays. Along with this, the issue will also be discussed with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as it regulates banking hours and internal functioning.

Will this be the new time for opening and closing of bank branches?

According to reports, if the government approves this proposal, banking hours can be increased by 40 minutes. This will make bank branches open from 9:45 am to 5:30 pm. Currently, most banks open till 10 am. Public dealing takes place till 4 pm. Banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays, but if this new rule comes into effect, all Saturdays can be declared holidays. Bank employees and unions have long demanded a 5-day working week, and now they hope that the government will soon take a final decision on this, which will start a new chapter in the banking sector.
